IL TESTAMENTO POLITICO DI UN TRADUTTORE: LA CITADELLE DE LA ROYAUTÉ DI GABRIEL CHAPPUYS

(THE POLITICAL TESTAMENT OF A TRANSLATOR: THE CITADELLE DE LA ROYAUTÉ BY GABRIEL CHAPPUYS)

Keywords: Chappuys, Botero, France, Monarchy, Absolutism

The essay focuses on the political treatise Citadelle de la Royauté (1603) drafted by the French translator Gabriel Chappuys (1546-1612?). Until now scholarship has overlooked the role played by this literate as an ideologue of monarchical power and, particularly, the political contribution provided in support of the emergent Bourbons’ monarchy. This article aims at showing, through the emblematic but unexplored case of Chappuys, the relevance of translators, printers and editors – in a context marked by a massive vulgarization of knowledge – as creators and inspirers of political debate. As for Chappuys, translation of Italian texts, such as Botero’s Ragion di Stato, is not merely philological endeavour but it has important political meaning which scholars cannot ignore. In the treatise Citadelle de la Royauté the translator develops, more widely, his own ideological vision presenting himself as a translator actively engaged in politics.

CONVERGENZE PARALLELE? THOMAS HOBBES E RENÉ GIRARD TRA CONTRATTO E SACRIFICIO

Keywords: Hobbes, Girard, violence, revenge, sacrifice.

The article proposes an examination of some salient elements of the political thoughts of Thomas Hobbes and René Girard in search of possible similarities and aspects of continuity and discontinuity between them. This is certainly not in order to find the former in the latter or vice versa, but rather to examine certain conceptual premises that have to do with politics as a whole, particularly with that part of it that investigates the problem of the problems of politics – namely that of coexistence and reciprocal relations in a context of scarce resources – and which is therefore nothing other than the essence of the challenge of living in organised communities. Starting with the question of revenge and counter-revenge, the article reads some aspects of Hobbes’ and Girard’s political analyses in parallel, highlighting what may be considered in some ways comparable insights into crucial issues of politics, despite inevitably very different political thoughts, if only because of the distance between their respective contextual contingencies. All this with a view to showing how, even in the face of widely divergent solutions or proposed solutions, the underlying problems of politics may not generally be so dissimilar.

PAOLO CAPPA E LA SQUILLA DELLA RISCOSSA: UN CONTRIBUTO DIMENTICATO SULLA STRADA VERSO IL PARTITO DEI CATTOLICI ITALIANI

Keywords: Paolo Cappa, Italian People’s Party, Catholic Party Squilla Della Riscossa, Christian Democracy.

The article focuses on the proposal for a Christian party elaborated in 1906 by a young Paolo Cappa (1888-1956) and published in a now forgotten article in the Savona newspaper La Squilla Democraticocristiana, framing it within the long and tormented path of the formation of a party of organised Catholics in Italy. A Christian spirit, anaconfessional base and the centrality of the Church’s social doctrine are the main points of the Ligurian journalist and politician’s proposal, which he sees as an alternative to both the liberal and socialist parties. The article therefore highlights the importance of Cappa’s political vision in the drafting of the Ppi programme

SISTEMI ELETTORALI E POLARIZZAZIONI IDEOLOGICHE. LE AMMINISTRATIVE DEL 1920

Keywords: early postwar period; local elections; political parties; electoral system; political Blocs.

The 1920 local elections were held under the majority list system. The keeping of this electoral system induced the various components of Italian liberalism to unite in a Constitutional Bloc as an antisocialist function. The popular party followed, with some difficulty, the directions of Secretary Sturzo, who chose the line of electoral intransigence by presenting autonomous lists, except for a few cases. The socialist party, divided among the various currents that would challenge each other at the Livorno Congress, faced the electoral competition under the banner of the “revolutionary conquest” of municipalities and provinces. Mussolini, while not officially engaging the Fascist in the elections, influenced the political propaganda of the Blocs, using the squads as the Blocs’ “armed guard”.

VERSO L’“UNITÀ-DISTINZIONE” DI MORALE E POLITICA NELL’ETÀ DELLA CONTRORIFORMA. IL GIUDIZIO CROCIANO SULLA “RAGION DI STATO” E LE SUE IMPLICAZIONI

Keywords: Croce, politics, moral, Reason of State, mediation.

The article offers a reconstruction of the Crocian assessment about the “Reason of State”, presented in the History of Baroque Age and in another text. In this way the article highlights the centrality of mediation between politics and morality, based on their own autonomy, born after the Machiavellian contribution. Such mediation is valorized by Croce through the discovery of Ludovico Zuccolo’s thought and in a challenging dialogue with the thesis of F. Meinecke’s Historismus.

IN LUOGO DI UN’INTRODUZIONE: NATURA E DEMOCRAZIA IN CHARBONNEAU

Keywords: nature, freedom, decentralization, Charbonneau, associative democracy.

The essay investigates the eco-political traits of Charbonneau’s thought and, in particular, focuses on the concepts of nature and democracy. For Charbonneau, nature evokes the value of freedom for those who eschew any type of planning or having an influence on the context in which they find themselves. In connection with this idea of nature-freedom, the territorial dimension which Charbonneau supports plays a fundamental role, by defending not only ecosystemic diversity, but also cultural and knowledge diversity. At the socio-political level, the (bio)regionalist approach involves, in contrast with the logic of domination, strengthening decentralization and participatory democracy by calling individuals and social groups to be more responsible by developing forms of self-organization and cooperation. On this basis, it can be argued that ecological democracy in the regionalist form brings forward of non-state governance and associative democracy to give life to a new ecological policy.

DALLA SECONDA REPUBBLICA AL SECONDO IMPERO. POLITICA, ISTITUZIONI E CONFLITTI IN FRANCIA. ALCUNE RIFLESSIONI

Keywords: Historiography, Revolution, Institutions, Politics, Bonapartism

Following the revolutionary events of 1848, contemporaries and early scholars directed particular attention to the political-institutional crisis that precipitated France’s rapid transition from the Second Republic to the Second Empire. Subsequently, there was a prolonged period of relative silence, with a significant resurgence in historiographical interest occurring only in the post-Second World War era. After elucidating the reasons for this delay, the author reviews the primary areas of research and takes stock of the advancements made in understanding democracy and Bonapartism, with a focus on representation, politics and institutions. Additionally, the author suggests avenues for further research development in these areas.

«RIMUOVERE GLI OSTACOLI». LE ORIGINI DEL DETTATO COSTITUZIONALE, TRA LETTERATURA E DIRITTO

Keywords: substancial justice, italian constitution, Piero Calamandrei, Lelio Basso, Salvatore Satta, De profundis.

The recent publication of the correspondence between Piero Calamandrei and Salvatore Satta opens a new horizon about the genesis of the formula «remove obstacles» in the art. 3 of the Italian Constitution. In fact, this expression appears, with reference to substantial justice, in an essay published by Calamandrei in May 1946, that is influenced by Liberal Socialism of Carlo Rosselli, and De profundis of Salvatore Satta, of which Calamandrei possessed the manuscript at that time. The essay develops this story, closing with the famous speech in Milan by the Florentine jurist, in which he states that the formula «remove obstacles» is the most important of the entire italian Constitution.
