The status granted to foreigners across the Spanish territory, whether domiciled or transient, for various reasons has been an element of attention for government authorities since at least the early 18th century. The Spanish-American war, which ended in 1898, and, above all, the First World War – the effects of which overwhelmed Spain despite its proclaimed neutrality – represented key moments. The presence in the territory of citizens of other States, especially European ones, and the consideration of their contribution to the nation, also through the processes of naturalisation, acquired special public importance and significantly influenced the relevant legislation in this regard.

This essay presents a critical reading of La nuova democrazia diretta, the composition published by Giuseppe Capograssi in 1922, when he was 33 years old, a few months before the march on Rome. We want to reflect on some still corrent issues: on the great leaders, for example, if they are needed or not for the survival of modern democracies. We want to reflect on some concepts: authority and sovereignty. We also intend to analyze the notions of mass and democracy, how they have been placed in the historical-cultural framework, destabilizing the political picture as well as the legal context about the relationship between State and citizens.

With worsening of social, political and economic problems and challenges, critical thinking finds space and, in the name of “sustainability,” the theoretical approach also seeks to identify the premises of a change that is both radical and reasonable, recovering long neglected practices, values and concepts. Bookchin’s vision, between polemic and analysis, between description and prescription, is clear and concrete: social structures must be changed to recreate a symbiotic and non-hierarchical relationship between humans and nature. In his theory ecological and social crises are interconnected; the exploitation of nature is a projection of man’s exploitation by man. This is a reading that deserves attention today, at a time when ecological sensitivity seems to be awakening with force.

(BETWEEN SOLIDARITY AND DISTRUST. ON THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE ITALIAN COMMUNIST PARTY AND THE POLISH UNIFIED WORKERS’ PARTY IN THE EARLY YEARS OF THE COLD WAR)

On the basis mainly of archival documents, the aim of this essay is to clarify the features of the relations between the Italian communist party and the Polish united workers’ party in the early years of the Cold War. The analysis of the relations between the two parties concerns three main matters: the funding of political activity; the political and cultural collaboration; the importance of the Yugoslav question in the political life of both parties. Apart from the spirit of solidarity, a certain distrust emerges in the relations between Italians and the Poles evidently caused by the divergent national interests and by the climate of the Cold War.

(«L’INDUSTRIALIZZAZIONE NEL MEZZOGIORNO COME PROBLEMA NAZIONALE». THE DEBATE IN THE PROSPETTIVE MERIDIONALI REVIEW 1955-1956)

The following essay reconstructs the long and complex debate on the industrialization of Southern Italy hosted by the journal «Prospettive Meridionali». The Catholic-oriented journal, directed by the Christian Democrat Giorgio Tupini, between 1955 and 1956 invited politicians, trade unionists, economists, intellectuals, and entrepreneurs to express their views on the methods and timing necessary for industrializing the South of Italy. The debate took place at a time when the Democrazia Cristiana, the leading governing party, supported the theories of the “nuovo meridionalismo” and Pasquale Saraceno, which viewed industry as an indispensable tool to help the southern economy. In particular, three trends emerged from the debate: one was opposition to the industrialization of the South directed by the state because it was seen as detrimental to the free market and damaging to the country’s economy; the proposal to initiate a broad economic process that, in addition to industrializing the southern part of the country, would also address social and cultural issues; full support for the state’s action, considered the only entity capable of undertaking risky economic initiatives and viewing industrialization as the most effective solution to the problem of unemployment.

(ANARCHIST VISIONS, ISLAMIC IMAGINARIES. A STUDY ON THE SPIRITUAL ISOMORPHISM BETWEEN ANARCHISM AND ISLAM)

This article aims to offer an overview on how Islamic anarchism can be conceptualized into the field of the history of political thought. This study is divided into three parts: a preliminary analysis of the relationship between the anarchist thought and the monotheistic conception of God, together with a focus on the anarchist orientalist visions on Islam. And a core part where a fragmented literature on Islamic anarchism is studied through the methodology of elective affinities. Presenting both the anti-authoritarian religious formulations of Muslim thinkers who lived during the ninth century in Basra, Iraq; and the anarchist Koranic exegesis of two contemporary Muslim activists: Mohamed Abdou and Abdennur Prado. The final result is an analysis of the isomorphism that have intervened between the Islamic thought and the anarchist one, across time and space.

The paper focuses on the first volume of Emanuele Cutinelli-Rendina’s biography of Benedetto Croce, entitled Benedetto Croce. Una vita per la nuova Italia and published by Aragno in 2022. More specifically, the paper is divided into three main sections. The first section sheds light on the methodological choices and assumptions underlying the volume, entitled Genesi di una vocazione civile (1866- 1918). The second section concerns Cutinelli-Rendina’s remarks on both Croce’s relationship to Italian socialism and his interpretation of historical materialism and Marxist theory. The third section is about Cutinelli-Rendina’s view of Croce’s neutralist position toward World War One.
