MIRABEAU: FRENCH REVOLUTIONARY AND COSMOPOLITAN TRANSLATOR

Keywords: Mirabeau, cosmopolitanism, translation, Romilly, French Revolution.

Count Mirabeau is remembered in particular as a charismatic leader during the early period of the French Revolution and as such, in popular imagination, emblematic of Frenchness. In reality, by the time the revolution broke out, Mirabeau already had an international reputation, and his political and cultural reference points were strikingly cosmopolitan. Intervening in a number of international debates, he used translation, in particular, as a means promoting the causes that were dear to him, through a collaboration with a young English lawyer, Samuel Romilly. This paper will explore Mirabeau’s work as a translator and propose a figure who was exemplary of the cosmopolitan environment of late eighteenth-century radicalism.

SOVRANITÀ NAZIONALE E RAPPRESENTANZA FEMMINILE: PARIGI 1788-1789

(NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY AND FEMALE REPRESENTATION: PARIS 1788-1789)

Keywords: French Revolution, national sovereignty, female representation, citizenship, Paris 1788-1789.

At the beginning of the French Revolution, a debate developed with the aim of redefining sovereignty and citizenship. In this context, women are considered passive citizens because, according to many opinions, their vote would be double that of their husband. But French women are calling for access to the assemblies both because of a question of justice and because of the need for there to be correspondence between those who are representatives and those who are represented, as well as for the contribution they can make to the State.

IL MOMENTO LACORDAIRE

(THE LACORDAIRE MOMENT)

Keywords: Lacordaire, Catholicism, Liberalism, France, Nineteenth century.

Henri Lacordaire was a leading figure in the history of Nineteenth-Century French Liberal-Catholicism. He aroused wide interest in the early years of the July Monarchy as an influential preacher in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. Then, he played a prominent role in the Revolution of 1848. Finally, despite being in opposition to Napoleon III, he was elected at the Académie Française in the culminationg years of the Second Empire. Thanks to his exceptional and often provocative intellectual performances, Lacordaire was constantly in the public eye. Through the lens of this peculiar and influential figure, this essay aims to show the profound transformations concerning political and religious institutions as well as modes of thinking in an epoch marked by the shadow of the French Revolution and by the dawning of a fully accomplished modernity.

ESSAI SUR L’ÉVOLUTION DES RAPPORTS ENTRE LA GÉOGRAPHIE ET L’HISTOIRE  DANS L’ŒUVRE DE PAUL VIDAL DE LA BLACHE, ANDRÉ SIEGFRIED ET PAUL BOIS (L’EXEMPLE DE LA PROVINCE DU MAINE)

(ESSAY ON THE EVOLUTION OF THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY IN THE WORKS OF PAUL VIDAL DE LA BACHE, ANDRÉ SIEGFRIED AND PAUL BOIS. EXAMPLE OF THE MAINE)

Keywords: Epistemological relationships between geography, political sociology and history, Paul Vidal de la Blache, André Siegfried, Paul Bois, Western France.

From a battered Maine, reduced to the land of chouannerie within a western France itself considered a side-show of French History, to a precise grasp of popular mindsets, fifty-seven years have separated the publishing of Tableau de la géographie de la France (1903) by the geographer Paul Vidal de La Blache from that of Paysans de l’Ouest (1960) by the historian Paul Bois. In between, André Siegfried published his fundamental study Tableau politique de la France de l’Ouest sous la Troisième République (1913), inaugurating electoral sociology. This fertile period made it possible to comprehend the political and social mechanisms operating in Maine and in western France generally which, for too long, have been overlooked or misrepresented.

POLITICA E «ORDINE» NELL’ITALIA LIBERALE (1861-1876)

(POLICY AND «PUBLIC ORDER« DURING ITALIAN LIBERAL STATE 1861-1876)

Keywords: Italian Liberal State, Penal Policy, Public Order, Decree-Law, Emergency laws.

This paper has been processed within a more general working hypothesis related to the analysis of the extraordinary measures developed by Italian liberal State during specific situations, such as criminal phenomena, political dissent, or social unrests, that very often used violence as a tool. For the historical phase we examine, the unconventional use of Decree-Laws and state of siege, produced a sort of “public order penal policy”, founded on typing some crimes and criminalizing those who commit them. This pattern basically entered inside the Italian legal system and the government’ praxis.

L’ITALIA REPUBBLICANA DI TOMMASEO TRA LETTERATURA E POLITICA

(REPUBLICAN ITALY IN THE LITERATURE AND POLITICS OF TOMMASEO)

Keywords: Niccolò Tommaseo, Risorgimento, national literature, liberal Catholicism, exile.

The essay reconstructs the presence and the role of Niccolò Tommaseo (1802-1874) in the Unification of Italy by examining the overall republican vision of Italy through his works, inspired by the ideas of liberal Catholicism. The paragraphs of the article highlight the cultural and political experiences he lived through, both in the years spent in exile in Paris and in the years before and after 1848. Particular attention is paid to the intellectual relationships that link Tommaseo to Florence, where he spends a good part of his life establishing himself as a writer and a patriot committed to national independence, always striving for a balanced relationship between Church and State even after the Unification.
