LAVORO E LIBERTÀ. DECLINAZIONI NELLA FRANCIA DELLA TERZA REPUBBLICA

(WORK AND LIBERTY. VARIATIONS IN THE FRANCE OF THE THIRD REPUBLIC)

Keywords: Duguit, Berth, Work, Autonomous Workers’Associations, Solidarity, Self-gouvernment.

The article aims to reconstruct the relationship between liberty and work, as it was theorised by Léon Duguit (1859-1928) and Édoaurd Berth (1875-1939) in the France of the Third Republic. The two political theorists had very different intellectual biographies, yet they shared a criticism of liberalism and the recognition of the importance of community association. To understand the two political thinkersʼ theoretical position concerning labour, this article connects it to their global view of society and the normative values of the French State. Duguit focuses on mutual solidarity as the symbolic generator, within a capitalistic economy, to redefine the concepts of liberty of work and liberty at work. He therefore idealizes cooperation between classes. By contrast, Berth believes in the necessity to refound society and its economy. He believes in emancipation, of the individual and of working class, as a form of self–government and hence idealizes autonomous factory worker.

L’ANALISI POLITICO-ECONOMICA SULL’ «ETÀ DI MEZZO» IN EPOCA FASCISTA: IL CASO PARADIGMATICO DI GIOACCHINO VOLPE (1922-1943)

(THE POLITICAL-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF MIDDLE AGES IN THE YEARS OF THE FASCIST GOVERNMENT: THE PARADIGMATIC CASE OF GIOACCHINO VOLPE [1922-1943])

Keywords: Middle Ages, instrumentalisation, utilitarism, communitarism, sources.

The most important studies on Middle Ages, published by Gioacchino Volpe date back to the years of the fascist goverment. Historiographic works such as “Medioevo Italiano” have influenced the present representation of historical events happened in Italy and Europe from the fifth to the fifteenth century but, to which degree does the reconstruction of the economic history of those centuries show traces of the economic policy adopted by Mussolini’s government from 1922 to 1943? Is it right to see in Volpe’s medieval works a political instrumentalization to justify the economic orientation of Fascist Italy? This scientific article shows that Volpe’s conclusions are the results of his attentive research on unpublished sources and they are free from servility towards the holders of the power.

STORICO, NON MORALISTA: ALCUNE OSSERVAZIONI SUI CATTIVI PENSIERI DI LUIGI FIRPO E LA SUA POLEMICA CON PIER PAOLO PASOLINI

(AN HISTORIAN, NOT A MORALIST: SOME REMARKS ON LUIGI FIRPO’S CATTIVI PENSIERI AND HIS POLEMIC AGAINST PIER PAOLO PASOLINI)

Keywords: Luigi Firpo, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Consumerism, Historicism, Sexuality.

The essay aims at explaining the reasons underpinning Luigi Firpo’s polemic against Pier Paolo Pasolini. More specifically, the essay focuses on some of Firpo’s articles written for the Italian newspaper “La Stampa” and then gathered in the two volumes of Cattivi pensieri, published in 1983 and 1999. By analyzing these articles, the essay shows that the debate between Firpo and Pasolini is grounded in the former’s view of history; it entails ideas about sexuality and consumerism divergent from Pasolini’s.

UTOPIA, STORIA E POLITICA. QUALCHE ANNOTAZIONE CRITICA A PROPOSITO DI UN RECENTE CONTRIBUTO STORIOGRAFICO

(UTOPIA, HISTORY AND POLITICS. SOME CRITICAL COMMENTS ABOUT A RECENT HISTORIOGRAPHICAL STUDY)

Keywords: Utopia, Democracy, History, Justice, Pluralism.

This short essay aims to analyze the contents of a recent study on the relationship between utopia and democracy. After to have illu-strated the historical phases of the concept of utopia, with particular reference to the period of the two English revolutions in seventeenth century, the idea that utopia is the “matrix” of democracy is que-stioned, underlining how the concept of democracy is much more complex and elusive and how utopia represents a very minority strand of the western philosophical-political tradition.
