𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗔𝗹𝗹. 𝗟𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 a cura di P.A Allum

‘Dear All’ is the correspondence of Antony (‘Percy’) Allum to his mother between 1956-1958 when he first arrived in Europe as a British council English language assistant. Although Percy was still then very much the English man on a kind of Grand Tour, admiring the monuments and landscapes that Plato had known, the political atmosphere that confronted him challenged his view of the world and broadened his ideological framework. The Suez crisis while he was in Naples, the Algerian War when he was in Marseille, the strikes and the social debates, the economic crisis, the devaluation of the franc, etc. made him aware of the emerging geopolitical situation that would become his area of interest later on. He would go on to become professor of Politics at the University of Reading (1967-1996) and then, professor of comparative politics at L’ Università degli Studi di Napoli L'Orientale (1996-2005) and an expert on Italian and west European politics. These letters, accompanied by his drawings, paintings and gouaches are full of historical details, social observations, and political analysis. They provide a new, fresh, and insightful snapshot of Europe as it emerged from the Second World War and a fascinating read. This is in stark contrast with today’s scant language so common in the social media world.
