This volume brings together contributions from the international conference held at Roma Tre University in November 2025, part of the PRIN 2022 PNRR project “Restoring nature for children in Italy – RINASCI.” It examines the legal challenges Member States face as they prepare to implement the Nature Restoration Regulation (EU) 2024/1991, given its ambitious targets and far-reaching impact on other areas of EU and national law. The authors draw upon EU law, national law and ecological science in analysing the many challenges – but also opportunities – this new legal regime offers. Essays address interpretive and practical questions that Member States must resolve in the short term – from public participation and state aid to the standard of diligence underlying non-deterioration duties, and the Regulation’s uneasy fit with the Common Agricultural Policy and science. They also explore deeper structural questions about how the Regulation intersects with contract law, environmental liability, and constitutional principles governing land use planning and private property.

Together, the essays offer a rigorous, wide-ranging account of the legal issues to be faced in order to restore biodiversity in Europe and may be of interest to scholars of EU law, environmental law, civil law, and agricultural law.
